New Haven, Conn. – The Yale women's tennis team kicked off the 2010-2011 campaign Friday at the 2010 Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta.
On the first day of tournament play, the Bulldogs played in thirteen matches. In singles play against Georgia, junior Vicky Brook defeated Alex Anghelescu 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 in Flight 1 play. In Flight 2, freshman Blair Seideman bested Kate Fuller 6-4, 6-2. In Flight 3, sophomore Elizabeth Epstein beat Nadja Gilchrist 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Senior captain Stevie Petrelli lost to Cameron Ellis 6-0, 6-2 in Flight 6. Fellow senior Lindsay Clark also lost, bested by Alina Jerjomna 6-2, 7-5 in Flight 7. In a tight match, junior Stephanie Kent was defeated by Rachel Hart 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3). In Yale's sole singles match not played against Georgia, senior Silia DeFillipis lost to Georgia Tech's Rosio Alberca Lopez 6-3, 6-3 in Flight 10 play.
In doubles action against Georgia Tech, the Bulldogs' Flight 1 team of Clark and Brook defeated Jillian O'Neill and Elizabeth Kilborn 8-3. In Flight 2 play, Georgia Tech's team of Sasha Krupina and Caroline Lilley defeated Yale's combination of Seideman and Epstein 8-5. In Flight 3, the Bulldogs, represented by Sullivan and Szokol, lost to Christina Ngo and Muriel Wacker 9-7. Rocio Lopez and Lynn Blau also bested Yale, winning the Flight 4 match against Petrelli and DeFillipis 8-2.
Play continues Saturday morning and wraps up Sunday.
