NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sunday, the Yale women's tennis team topped Cornell 7-0, keeping the hope of an Ivy League championship a reality.
The win gives the Bulldogs a 3-1 record, with matches next weekend against Harvard and Dartmouth, both of whom are undefeated. The only other team between Yale and first place is Brown, whom the Bulldogs will face in the regular season finale. With that said though, Yale will need help in the form of a Princeton loss, as the Tigers currently hold the tiebreaker against the Bulldogs.
In today's match, in doubles, Yale struck early, with 8-2 victories at the number one spot, with freshman Annie Sullivan and senior Lindsay Clark, and the number three spot, with freshmen Blair Seideman and Kim Szokol. In the third match to finish, juniors Stephanie Kent and Vicky Brook struggled after tying the match 4-4, ultimately losing 8-6. On the bright side, the pair showed flashes of excellent play, especially at the net, in what was only their second time playing together.
In singles, the Bulldogs played very well, taking all six matches. Szokol won first, taking both sets in the sixth spot. Seideman was next at the number three spot, also winning in straight sets. No. 115 ranked Elizabeth Epstein, playing at number two, overpowered Cornell's Ryann Young en route to a two-set victory that clinched the match for Yale, and Kent, playing in the fourth spot, won her match shortly after. Sullivan, playing at number five, had a closer match but still pulled off a two-set victory. That left only Brook, playing at number one against Cornell's Christine Ordway, who had earlier beaten Brook and Kent in doubles. Brook would have her vengeance though, winning 7-5, 7-6 (5), in a slightly controversial tiebreak which featured confusion over the score after the players disagreed and the USTA official present was unsure.
Yale next plays at Harvard Friday at 2 p.m.
