PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Tuesday, Yale junior Elizabeth Epstein lost her first-round match at the ITA All-American Championships to Florida's Olivia Janowicz in three sets.
Epstein played a very good match against Janowicz, a sophomore that is one of the nation's best young players. Janowicz's preseason ranking put her at No. 37 nationally, compared to No. 92 for Epstein.
In the match, Epstein lost the first set 6-4, but came back to take the second one 6-3 to tie the match before dropping the final set 6-2. Epstein also played a consolation game against Vanderbilt sophomore Lauren Mira, dropping the match in three sets. Epstein took the first set 6-4, but was unable to close out a victory, dropping the next two sets 6-4 and 6-2, respectively.
Epstein's loss ended the tournament for the Bulldogs, but the week was nonetheless a positive one for Yale, with two representatives in singles (senior Vicky Brook played her match on Saturday) at the championships.
