Bulldogs to Kick Off Season At Georgia Tech Invitational
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's tennis team will kick off the fall season this weekend as the Bulldogs travel to Atlanta's Georgia Tech University to play in their second consecutive Yellow Jacket Invitational.
The tournament will take place from Friday to Sunday, and will be formatted differently than a normal collegiate team match. Results will not count towards the team's record, but they will count towards individual records and rankings. This is called a hidden dual tournament. The teams competing will play as separate singles and doubles units, with both squads never competing against the same opponent in the same day. The other teams competing are the same as they were in the 2010 tournament: Georgia Tech, Georgia and Oklahoma State.
Georgia finished last season as the nation's No. 8 team, Georgia Tech was No. 13 and Oklahoma State was No. 24, while Yale was No. 31. In terms of individual players, Georgia has four players ranked in the top 120, while Georgia Tech has five. Both schools also have two doubles teams in the top 60.
For the Bulldogs, this weekend will represent both a warm-up for what promises to be a competitive season as well as a good marker of where the team is in terms of quality of play.
The Bulldogs will have returning seniors Vicky Brook and captain Steph Kent, junior Elizabeth Epstein, ranked as the third best Ivy League player and No. 92 overall in the nation, and sophomores Blair Seideman and Annie Sullivan. Joining them on the Yale squad are freshmen Amber Li and Hanna Yu. Li hails from Tampa Bay, Fla., and peaked as tennisrecruiting.net's No. 15 recruit overall in the class of 2011. Yu is from Northbrook, Ill., and finished her senior year of high school as the No. 18 recruit in the class of 2011.
Yale's schedule is as follows:
Noon-2:30 Yale vs Georgia singles
2:30-4:00 Yale vs Georgia Tech doubles
2-3:30 Yale vs Oklahoma St. doubles
3:30-6 Yale vs Georgia Tech singles
9-11:30 Yale vs Oklahoma State singles
11:30-1 Yale vs Georgia doubles
