MIAMI, Fla. – The No. 21 Yale women's tennis team extended its record to 10-2 with a 4-2 victory over FIU that was less close than the score indicates.
Due to a rain delay, part of the same weather system that caused the cancellation of Thursday's match against Mississippi, the doubles section of the match was not played. Despite not having a chance to utilize their usual advantage by winning the first point of the match, the Bulldogs played well enough in singles to claim an easy victory.
Junior Elizabeth Epstein played No. 1, and crushed Rita Maisak 6-2, 6-3 to give Yale an early lead.
Sophomore Blair Seideman, at No. 3, followed up quickly with win number two for the Bulldogs, taking out Lisa Johnson 6-0, 6-4.
At No. 4, senior Vicky Brook piled on, beating Karyn Guttormsen 6-4, 6-4 to put the Bulldogs one match away from a victory.
Guzick was the first to complete her match, losing to Giulietta Boha 7-6 (10-8), 6-0 to put the Panthers as close as they would get, at 4-1.
Sullivan finished next, winning the first set 6-4 before a close-fought but ultimately futile effort from opponent Christine Seredni gave Brook a 6-3 win in the second set to claim the match for herself, and also clinch the match for the Bulldogs.
Finally, Yu played the closest match of the day against Sarah McLean. McLean took the first set 6-4, but Yu grabbed the second 6-2. In the decisive third set, McLean went ahead 6-5. The final game featured 15 deuces before McLean pulled away and made the final match score 4-2 in favor of Yale.
