PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – On the first day of the prequalifying round at the Riviera/ITA All American Championships, freshman Hanna Yu and junior Blair Seideman both advanced to the third round of prequalifying.
Yu was matched up against Christina Smith, a UC Irvine student-athlete. Yu took the first set easily, 6-2, but Smith bounced back strong with a 6-1 win in the second. Yu earned the victory, though, by taking the third set 6-3. Next, Yu went up against Purdue's Mara Schmidt. Schmidt had won her first match in three close sets against Texas' Noel Scott, but fell to Yu 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Schmidt had played against Yale before, beating graduated Vicky Brook '12 in straight sets in January. Yu will face off against Utah's Callie Craig Sunday, with a trip to the qualifying round on the line.
Junior Blair Seideman, playing against Northwestern's Veronica Corning in the first round, won her match 6-0, 6-4 to advance to a second round match against Lina Padegimaite. Seideman won in straight sets, though, by a score of 6-0, 6-2. Seideman will have to defeat Louisville's Rebecca Shine tomorrow to advance into the qualifying round.
Said Seideman of the wins, "I thought we both really competed well and played tough. We raised our level for the competition. We'll try to keep it up tomorrow and continue into the qualifying draw."
In doubles, Seideman and Yu lost a tough match to the Auburn duo of Emily Flickinger and Pleun Burgmans 9-7. Neither Seideman and Yu nor their Auburn counterparts had ever played in a match together before.
