Bulldogs Advance in ITA Kick-Off Weekend
Team Remains Strong at Doubles
OXFORD, Miss. – In its first match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Sunday, the No. 28 Yale women's tennis team pulled off a 4-2 upset over No. 19 Ole Miss. The Rebels, who are hosting the tournament, will play in a consolation match on Monday, while the Bulldogs will advance to the finals.
The Yale team, a dominant force in the doubles game, started the match with freshman Madeleine Hamilton and junior Annie Sullivan earning a crucial 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. While sophomores Hanna Yu and Amber Li next conceded their match at No. 2, falling 8-5 to Caroline Rohde-Moe and Marija Milutinovic, junior Blair Seideman and senior captain Elizabeth Epstein battled for an 8-6 win at No. 3, securing the doubles point for the away team.
Entering singles play with a one-point deficit, the Rebels were eager to recover and threatened to pull away. In the first match to finish, No. 31 Blair Seideman fell 6-2, 6-3 to Julia Jones at No. 3, and only shortly thereafter, No. 90 Madeleine Hamilton took No. 30 Caroline Rohde-Moe to three sets but eventually conceded the point at No. 1 (6-2, 4-6, 6-2).
But after dropping hard-fought matches, the Bulldogs remained perfect through the rest of the order. No. 42 Elizabeth Epstein defeated Mai El Kamash at No. 2 (7-6, 6-7, 6-2), while Hanna Yu took down Erin Stephens at No. 4 (6-4, 6-4), and Annie Sullivan dealt Marija Milutinovic a loss at No. 5 (6-3, 6-2). With the result already decided, Amber Li's match at No. 6 went unfinished.
The four-team tournament that features Illinois, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Yale is part of a 60-team national event hosted across 15 sites. The winner of each site will gain a berth at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship Feb. 22-24. Yale will vie for that spot Monday as they face No. 25 Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. For live updates from the tournament, click here.
