Hamilton and Sullivan Eliminated in Semifinals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. The Yale women's tennis team's final members in contention at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships were eliminated Monday, as senior captain Annie Sullivan fell in the quarterfinals of the singles bracket and, playing with sophomore Madeleine Hamilton, the semifinals of the doubles bracket.

Sullivan opened the day at singles against a familiar opponent for the Bulldogs. Columbia sophomore Kanika Vaidya, who handed junior Hanna Yu a 6-4, 6-3 loss on Saturday to eliminate her in the round of 64, was also Sullivan's own matchup when the Bulldogs faced the Lions last spring. Sullivan defeated Vaidya 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 on that day but struggled to produce a similar result Monday. Vaidya shut out Sullivan in the first set, but the Yale captain was able to turn it around in the second set, winning 6-2. With a spot in the semifinals on the line, Sullivan and Vaidya battled for games in the third set, but at the end of the day, it was Vaidya who came out on top, 6-3. She will face Brown's Dayna Lord in the semifinals Tuesday.

With all Bulldog players out of contention at singles, Sullivan turned her attention to doubles Monday afternoon, as she and Hamilton took on Lord and Hannah Camhi of Brown in the quarterfinals. The formidable Yale duo, who had sailed through its first three matches without giving up more than two points, faced its greatest challenge thus far in the No. 5 seeded Brown pair. Still, they handled the matchup with ease, winning by a final score of 8-4.

Advancing to the semifinals, the Bulldogs met with a strong pair from Columbia, Tina Jiang and Crystal Leung, who had taken down the tournament's No. 2 and No. 6 seeds on their way to the final four. The surprise pair proved too much for the Bulldogs, who fell 8-2 and were the last Bulldogs to be eliminated.

With their four-match run to the semifinals, Hamilton and Sullivan improved upon their strong performance at last year's Northeast Regionals, where they played as a pair and were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

The USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals will conclude Tuesday. The Bulldogs will be back in action Nov. 8-10 at the Northwestern Invite in Chicago, Ill.
