NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The poor New England weather did nothing to slow down the Yale women's tennis team, which picked up its first victory in the Ivy League today with a 5-2 win over Princeton at home. Each of the top four singles matches went to the Bulldogs (6-7, 1-1).
Yale took two of the three doubles matches in exciting fashion to jump out to a quick 1-0 lead. The No. 2 squad of Aimee Kim and Christina Cutter beat Darcy Robinson and Joanna Roth 8-6, and No. 3 Lindsey Dashiell and Janet Kim downed Rankin Williams and Christine Kansky, 8-6.
Head Coach Katie Granson noted that the return of Cutter, who has been out since mid-November with an injury, has been huge in recent weeks.
"It's really good to have her back in the lineup," she said.
The Bulldogs blitzed the singles portion of the match, picking up four wins in straight sets. No. 4 Ashley Miles won a tough 7-6(4), 7-5 match over Kransky, but otherwise it was relatively smooth sailing for Yale.
"Today was a really solid effort," said Granson. "From our No. 1 singles player to our bench, everyone showed up."
Yale will head to the Empire State next weekend, where the team squares off with Columbia on Fri., Apr. 14 and Cornell on Sat., Apr. 15. Granson noted that this early in the season, the Ivy League title is still anyone's for the taking.
"I think it's just going to come down to who handles the tight points better," she said. "There are always upsets in the Ivy League."
