Aimee Kim Wins in Three Sets to Help Bulldogs Squeak By Columbia, Move to 4-0 in Ivies

April 17, 2004

Freshman Aimee Kim's three-set comeback victory over Columbia's Kendall Murphy proved to be the decisive point in Yale's match against the Lions. The Bulldogs split the singles matches 3-3 with Columbia but two Yale doubles teams won to give Yale the 4-3 edge. The win improved the Elis to 4-0 in the Ivy League with matches against Brown, Dartmouth, and Harvard remaining.

It was the second consecutive weekend sweep for Yale, who defeated Princeton and Penn last weekend at home and Cornell and Columbia on the road over the past two days.

"It was our second game on the road, and everyone was a little tired," said Head Coach Chad Skorupka. "In the end, Aimee Kim pulled out a thrilling three-set victory and had a lot of energy. It was great for her, being a freshman, to be able to put the team in that winning situation."

Kim's match, at the No. 6 slot, was the last to go on and last to finish, and after she dropped the first set 4-6 to Murphy she rebounded with 6-4, 6-1 sets to win the match and give Yale the fourth point.

The Elis also earned singles victories from Reshmi Srinath and Rashmee Patil in the No. 3 and No. 5 positions. Srinath won her match without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0, while Patil was a 6-4, 7-5 victor.

Christine Alford, Karlyn Martin, and Ashley Martin all dropped singles matches but were crucial in doubles, where Yale won two of three matches to earn the doubles point. The Martins were 8-3 winners in No. 1 doubles, while Alford and teammate Olivia Nix won their doubles match 8-4 to help the Elis.

Patil and Kim fell 8-6 at the No. 2 doubles.

The Bulldogs will host Brown this Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. before playing a Friday afternoon game against Dartmouth in Hanover, NH. Yale wraps up its Ivy League and regular season play with a Sunday home game against Harvard at 12:30 this weekend.
