New Haven, CT - The Yale women's tennis team played one of their best matches of the season Saturday afternoon against Cornell on the Cullman Courts. The Elis shone in both doubles and singles action, with Yale easily creaming Cornell in singles play. Today's victory gives the Bulldogs an 11-5 overall record and a 2-2 record in Ivy play.
The Elis started the afternoon on a positive note by clinching the doubles point against Cornell. Reshmi Srinath and Rashmee Patil proved to be a strong pair by winning the No. 2 game 8-2. Christine Alford and Aimee Kim seemed to effortlessly claim the No.1 spot, as they quickly racked up eight points to Cornell's lone point (8-1).
No. 6 singles Olivia Nix hoped to build on the momentum of the doubles matches, but was quickly sidelined by an injury.
However, the remaining Elis quickly rallied and systematically took down Cornell in straight sets. Stephanie White secured the No. 5 game for Yale, going 6-1, 6-0 for a virtually uncontested win. No. 4 Alford faced Erika Takeuchi, who gave Alford the biggest dose of competition seen in the singles matches that afternoon--however Alford still defeated Takeuchi 6-4, 6-3.No. 3 singles Kim waltzed to victory, going 6-1, 6-4 to continue Yale's domination of the match. In typical fashion, Patil and Srinath finished off the match with a flourish, securing seemingly effortless wins. Patil claimed the No. 2 spot 6-0, 6-2, and Srinath reigned at No. 1 6-2, 6-0. The Bulldogs hope to continue their winning streak as they travel to Cambridge to face off against Harvard on Fri., Apr. 22, at 2 pm. Report filed by Christie Yang '06, Yale Sports Publicity.
