New Haven, CT - In a showdown between two undefeated Ivy League teams in the season finale, Harvard topped Yale 5-2 to claim the league championship. The Crimson (7-0 Ivy) won the doubles point and four of six singles matches to take the title, while Yale (6-1 Ivy) finished in second place.
While it would end indoors at Cullman Courts, the match began outside under skies that gradually became more overcast. The teams split the first two doubles matches, with Yale winning 8-6 at No. 3 behind Stephanie White and Olivia Nix and Harvard winning 8-0 at No. 2. At No. 1, Harvard's Courtney Bergman and Susanna Lingman eventually edged Yale's Karlyn Martin and Ashley Martin 9-7.
Bergman, ranked No. 38, and Lingman, ranked No. 109, won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles in straight sets to put the pressure on Yale. With Harvard's Cindy Chu up a set and ahead of Stephanie White 5-2 in the second set at No. 6, there was a momentary break in the action as rain forced play indoors. Chu, up 40-30, was able to register the clinching point as soon as the match resumed. Yale did get wins from Rashmee Patil at No. 5 and Ashley Martin at No. 4 -- the final match for the Martin sisters, Yale's two seniors.
"We played a very competitive doubles point and came up short at the end," said head coach Chad Skorupka. "We weren't able to keep the momentum into singles play. The coaching staff is very proud of this team. Our graduating seniors, Karlyn and Ashley Martin, are leaving with a 21-7 Ivy League dual match record. We wish them the best in their future endeavors."
