Philadelphia, PA - Three Yale singles players advanced to the round of 16 at the 2007 Cissie Leary Invitational Friday at Penn. Junior Janet Kim, the No. 4 seed, freshman Lindsay Clark, and freshman Lauren Ritz will all play again in the round of sixteen Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Kim defeated Virginia Tech's Jessica Brouwer 1-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the second round to advance to the round of sixteen. Kim will play Penn's Alexa Ely at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Clark cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Columbia's Lauren Shearer in the first round. Clark then knocked off seeded J.J. Larson of Virginia Tech 7-5, 6-0 in the second round. She will play seeded Julia Koulbitskaya of Penn tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
Ritz defeated Nina Suda of Columbia 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. Ritz then advanced to the round of sixteen with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over seeded Rebecca Parks in the second round. Ritz will take on Edina Horvath of Kansas Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Sophomore Sarah Lederhandler, seeded in the top 16, fell in the second round 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 to Sydney Murray of Columbia. Lederhandler will play again Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against Virginia Tech's Holly Johnson.
Senior Lindsey Dashiell cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Yolande Callagahan of St. Bonaventure before falling in the second round 6-3, 6-1 to seeded Masha Pozar of UMass. Dashiell will take on Sarah Ahmed of Virginia Tech at 12 p.m. Saturday in the Consolation Double Jeopardy Singles bracket.
After falling in the main draw 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 to Elyse Steiner of Temple, freshman Stevi Petrelli bounced back and won her first consolation match 2-6, 6-1, 10-3 over Lauren Sadaka of Penn. She will play in the consolation round of sixteen Saturday against Abbey Walker of Virginia Tech at 10:30 a.m.
Likewise, junior Lilian Nguyen will participate in the round of sixteen in the consolation bracket against Taylor Marable of Princeton after falling first round of the main draw to Yuliana Svistun of Kansas.
In the Doubles tournament, both the team of Petrelli and Kim and the team of Nguyen and Dashiell won their first round matches before falling in the second round. Both sets of double teams will play in the consolation round of sixteen tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
The sophomore team of Lederhandler and Rhee and the freshman team of Ritz and Clark both endured first round defeats in the doubles draw. Both teams will participate in the consolation round of sixteen Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
