Bulldogs Battle it Out at Maryland

College Park, MD - The women's tennis team encountered a busy day of matches at the Maryland Invitational. Olivia Nix '07 fared exceptionally well in singles play, making the finals of the C flight.

In the A flight doubles, Aimee Kim `07 and Janet Kim `09 beat Lauren Connelly and Kiki Stastny of Notre Dame to advance to the semifinal round. The dynamic Kims beat Notre Dame 8-5. The duo then faced off against Daniela Bercek and Jessi Robinson of Duke, falling 8-2.

Nix and Rashmee Patil '07 also competed in the A flight doubles, defeating Lauren Archer and Parker Gover of Duke 8-5. Nix and Patil played Marianne Baker and Ramona But of Maryland in the semifinals and lost 8-1.

In the B flight doubles, Christina Cutter `09 and Ashley Miles `09 fell to Marina Chiarelli and Mykala Hedberg of LSU 8-2. Cutter and Miles are set to play against West Virginia in the consolation round.

In C flight doubles action, Karolina Grygierowska '09 and Lillian Nguyen `09 competed against Aleksandra Cekic and Marjolein Van de Ven of WSU in the semifinal round, and were defeated 8-0.

In the A flight singles, J Kim dominated over Kiki Stastny of Notre Dame, winning 7-6(5), 6-2. J Kim then encountered Daniela Bercek of Duke in the quarterfinals. In the end Bercek triumphed 6-2, 6-0. J Kim then played Maryland's Baker in the consolation round, but Baker slipped by Kim, winning 6-4, 6-3. Yale standout Patil played Notre Dame's Connelly, but fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Patil then faced off against Jessi Robinson of Duke, but Robinson was able to pull through with the win 6-1, 6-1. However, Patil redeemed herself by triumphing against Lauren Seaman of LSU, easily winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

In the B flight singles, A Kim received a bye to the quarterfinals, then took on Monica Lyskawa of West Virginia. Lyskawa won the heated match, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(1). Miles took on Parker Goyer of Duke, triumphantly winning 6-2, 6-3. Miles then played against Maria Chiarelli of LSU to advance to the semifinals, but Chiarelli was able to hold Miles off 6-1, 6-4.

In the C flight singles, Cutter beat Maria Ring of WSU, then fell 6-4, 6-4 to Anastaysiva Dubova of LSU. Cutter then played Jennifer Dent of Maryland, beating dent in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Nix beat Raynie Theis of West Virginia 6-3, 6-3. Nix then beat Camilla Caliari of LSU, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Nix continued her hot streak against Julia Grace of Maryland, totally obliterating Grace's hopes a finals berth with a winning score of 7-5, 6-1.

In the D flight singles, Nguyen received a bye to the quarterfinals, where she played against Maryland's Juliana Naso. Naso defeated Nguyen 6-2, 6-1. Nguyen went on to smash Ashley Constantine of West Virginia in the consolation round, 6-3, 6-4. Grygierowska defeated Kara Konomos of WSU in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Grygierowska then played against Brooke Rogers, who defeated Grygierowska 6-0, 6-0. In the consolation round, Grygierowska lost to Bianca Selaru of WSU in a highly contested match, 0-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.

The Elis continue play on Sunday, September 25, at College Park.
