Flushing Meadows, NY - Junior Janet Kim advanced to the quarterfinals of the Flight "A" Singles draw at the USTA Invite in Flushing Meadows, NY Saturday. Freshmen Lindsay Clark and Lauren Ritz advanced to the quarterfinals of the Flight "A" Doubles draw.
The Bulldogs had a successful day at the USTA Invite Saturday as six Yale players or teams advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective flights.
Kim, seeded No. 5 in the Flight "A" Singles draw, rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jenny Shular of Penn St. in the round of 32. Kim then pulled out a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Kate Kamendova of Washington St.
Clark and Ritz came up with two 8-6 victories in the round of 32 and round of 16. They defeated Katherine Ariak and Katrina Elder-Bush of Rutgers before taking away the victory over the No. 3 seed Tiffany Clifford and Christi Liles.
Kim and sophomore Sarah Lederhandler earned a trip to the quarterfinals of the Flight "B" Doubles draw with two victories Saturday. Kim and Lederhandler defeated Natalia Christenson and Angela Hendry of Columbia 8-4 in the round of 32. Kim and Lederhandler then came up with an 8-4 victory over Livia Gherman and Aleksandra Stefanova of Washington St. in the round of sixteen.
Lederhandler also found success in the Flight "B" Singles draw. As the No. 3 seed, Lederhandler defeated Jesse Adler 7-5, 6-0 in the round of 32. Facing Alina Sullivan of Boston College in the round of 16, Lederhandler cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Both No. 7 seed Ritz and Clark will compete in the quarterfinals of the Flight "C" Singles draw after coming away with two victories Saturday.
Head Coach Danielle Lund said the team played well Saturday. "All in all, we had a very good day," she said.
