Bulldogs Compete at USTA Invite

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The Bulldogs began competition at the USTA Invite Saturday by winning 23 of 24 matches they played. Twenty-one teams, including nationally ranked Texas A&M, Purdue, Iowa, and Wake Forest, are competing at the tournament.
The Bulldogs competed in seven different singles brackets along with four doubles brackets. In the singles I bracket, senior Janet Kim cruised to two straight set victories. She defeated Natalia Christenson of Columbia 6-1, 6-3 and Shoko Okuda of Columbia 6-1, 6-1.
Junior Jessica Rhee defeated Kennifer Holzber of Rutgers 6-1, 6-3 and Joanna Craven of Purdue 7-6, 7-6 in the singles II bracket.
In the singles III bracket, sophomore Lindsay Clark rolled to two straight set victories with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sara Abutovic of Winthrop and a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sara Mansur of Brown.
Sophomore Stevi Petrelli handled both of her opponents in the singles IV bracket with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jessica Young of Iowa and a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Carissa Aboubakare of Brown.
In the singles V bracket, sophomore Lauren Ritz made quick work of her opponents with two straight set victories. She defeated Sydney Murray of Columbia 6-3, 6-0 and Julie Flanzer of Brown 6-0, 7-5.
Two members of Yale competed in the singles VI bracket. Freshman Vicky Brook defeated Sandra Herrera 6-2, 6-3 before knocking off her second opponent 6-1, 6-4. Junior Sarah Lederhandler defeated Jurelle Mendoza of Army 6-1, 7-5 before taking care of Shanya Miller of Cornell 6-0, 6-0.
After winning her first match 7-5, 6-0 in the singles VII bracket, Lilian Nguyen suffered the lone loss for the Bulldogs Saturday with a 6-1, 6-0 loss in her second match.
In the doubles I draw, Clark and Kim defeated Army's Niki Flach and Annie Houghton 8-3.
Brook and Ritz rolled to an 8-2 win over opponents Kelcie Klockenga and Ally Majerick of Iowa in the doubles II draw.
In the doubles III draw, Petrelli and Rhee pulled out a 9-7 win over Emily Ellis and Kathrin Sorroko of Brown.
Lederhandler and Nguyen rolled to an 8-2 win over Ashley Mitchell and Ryan Reichal of Dartmouth 8-2 in the doubles IV draw.
The Bulldogs will continue competition at the USTA Invite Sunday.
