Elis Compete in USTA Team Invitational

Flushing Meadows, NY - The Yale women's tennis team competed in the United States Tennis Association Women's College Tennis Invitational in Flushing Meadows Corona Park this weekend. Due to inclement weather, the tournament venue was relocated to a variety of tennis facilities around New York City. Ashley Miles `09 led the team by dominating the "C 2" flight singles, winning the final against Texas A&M's Marisa Druss in three sets.

In the "A 1"flight doubles, Janet Kim `09 and Olivia Nix '07 were defeated in the first round by Davi Alvarez and Federica Van Advichern of Clemson, 8-0. J. Kim and Nix went on to compete against Kristen Flesch and Megan Nobleo of Army, winning the match 8-6. The duo then triumphed over the team of Laura Ganzar and Megan McGavrock of South Carolina.

The "A 2" flight doubles saw Christina Cutter `09 and Aimee Kim `07 make their way to the semi-final match. Cutter and A. Kim first encountered Lauren Holzberg and Sasha Abraham of Penn State, winning the match 9-7(4). In the quarterfinals, Cutter and A. Kim played No. 4 seed Laura Marver and Danielle Petrisko of Kentucky, winning the match 8-6 to advance to the semi-finals, where Cutter and Kim were defeated by the No. 1 seed Karina Ledaja and Maryora Franco of Arkansas, 8-6.

The Elis had two teams compete in the "B 2" doubles flight. Miles and Christina Alford `07 were defeated in the first round by Vlatka Jovanovic and Audrey Bourdeleau of Arkansas, 8-1. In the consolation round, Miles and Alford defeated Lauren Sadaka and Ashley Lostorro of U Penn, 8-4.

Lilian Nguyen `09 and Catherine Starr `08 beat Eunice Chao and Kara Worsley of Columbia 8-5 to advance to the "B 2" flight quarterfinals. However, No. 1 seed Melissa Cornett and Rachel Wilheim of Arkansas defeated the Yale team 8-1 in the quarterfinals. Nguyen and Starr bounced back with a win over Brown in the consolation round.

In singles action, Cutter was defeated by Anna Blagodarova of Texas A & M in the first round of the "A 1" flight singles, 7-5, 6-1. In the "A 2" flight, A. Kim lost to No. 3 seed Milena Kachar of Columbia in the first round, 6-4, 6-2.

In the "B 1"singles flight, J. Kim won in straight sets against Julia Roach of NC State, going 7-5, 7-5. J. Kim was defeated in the quarterfinals by No. 4 seed Lana Krasnopolsky of Boston College, 6-2, 7-6.

Nix competed in the "B 2" flight, losing to Natasa Virokovic of South Carolina 6-1, 6-2. However, Nix won in three sets over Alexis Plukas of U Penn in the consolation round, 3-6, 6-2, 10-5.

In the "C 1" flight, Alford was defeated in the first round by Melissa Cornett of Arkansas, 6-4, 6-4. Alford came back strong in the consolation round, beating the No. 2 seed, Seva Iwinski of Texas A & M, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Nguyen, who was seeded No. 2 in the "D 1"flight, won her match against Nina Suda of Columbia, 7-6(0), 6-7(2), (11), to advance to the quarterfinals. Nguyen defeated Sara Brown Mansur of Brown in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 11-9, to advance to the semi-finals. Nguyen was beaten by Laura Trimble of Princeton in the semi-finals 6-1, 6-1.

Miles swiftly swept through the "C 2" flight, first winning in straight sets against Lyly Cao Minh of Harvard, 6-3, 6-2. Miles then went on to beat No. 1 seed Alexandra Guerra of NC State, 3-6, 6-4 10-7, in the semi-finals. Miles then faced off against Marisa Druss of Texas A & M in the finals, winning the match, 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.

The Elis return to action on Oct.21 at the ITA Eastern Regional held at West Point.
