Jan. 12, 2009

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After winning the Ivy League and earning an NCAA tournament berth last season, the Bulldogs will begin the 2009 season ranked No. 71 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings. Several players on Yale's team are ranked in the ITA East regional singles and doubles rankings.

Senior Janet Kim is ranked No. 15, freshman Vicky Brook is ranked No. 19, and sophomore Lindsay Clark is ranked No. 24 in the East regional singles rankings. The doubles team of Kim and Clark are ranked No. 11 in the doubles rankings.

The Bulldogs return seven members of last year's Ivy Championship team, six of whom started on the team. Brook is the only addition to the team that went undefeated in the Ivy League. Kim is the reigning Ivy League player off the year after finishing last season with a 6-1 record against Ivy League competition.

Yale will face stiff competition in the Ivy League though as both Princeton and Penn are ranked higher at No. 61 and No. 67, respectively. Penn finished second in the Ivy League last season with a 6-1 record and Princeton enters this season with a strong freshman class led by Lauren McHale, who is ranked No. 74 nationally and No. 5 in the East regional singles rankings.

Seven of Yale's 19 spring semester opponents are nationally ranked (No. 12 Vanderbilt University, No. 19 University of Michigan, No. 24 University of Tennessee, No. 54 Western Michigan, No. 61 Princeton, No. 67 Penn, and No. 72 SMU). The Bulldogs matches against Vanderbilt and Michigan will have extra meaning as they are against assistant coach Amanda Fish and head coach Danielle Lund McNamara's respective alma maters.
