NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sarah Lederhandler, a junior from Miami, Fla., was named captain for the Yale women's tennis team for the 2009-10 season. Lederhandler was elected by her teammates Tuesday night to succeed two-year captain Lilian Nguyen.

In her three seasons at Yale, Lederhandler has been a major contributor for the Bulldogs. As a freshman, Lederhandler played the whole Ivy League season at No. 2 singles and posted a 4-3 record to earn second team All-Ivy honors. During her sophomore season, Lederhandler battled injuries and went 3-4 in the Ivy League at No. 4 singles to help Yale earn an Ivy League Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. This season, Lederhandler went a perfect 5-0 in Ivy League play at No. 6 singles despite being injured much of the season.

Lederhandler said it was an honor to be elected captain by her teammates.

"Being so close to everyone on my team makes this really special for me," Lederhandler said. "With the four girls we have coming in joining the returning players on our team, I have no doubt that we will compete to win an Ivy League Championship next season."

Head coach Danielle Lund McNamara said Lederhandler will excel in the role of captain next season.

"Sarah is one of our toughest competitors and always works hard," McNamara said. "I think she is ready for this role and will do a great job leading this team to the next level. She understands that being Captain is an incredible honor and also a big responsibility, and I think she will rise to the challenge. I'm looking forward to see how she will step into the position and influence the team."

Yale also handed out its season awards Tuesday night. Senior Janet Kim received the Lisa Rosenblum award as the team MVP. The special contribution award went to senior Lilian Nguyen, the outgoing captain. Freshman Vicky Brook was named most improved.
