Dakota McCoy Named Academic All-District
Rising Junior Also Has Earned Goldwater Scholarship
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Rising junior Dakota McCoy (Wexford, Pa.), who competed for Yale at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships both indoors and outdoors this past season, has been named first team Capital One Academic All-District 1 in women's track & field/cross country. She was one of 10 first-team selections in the university division of District 1, which includes seven U.S. states in the Northeast plus five Canadian provinces.
An ecology and evolutionary biology major, McCoy had her work in the classroom recognized earlier this year when she was selected as one of 275 recipients (out of 1,095 applicants) of the Goldwater Scholarship for excellence in science, math and engineering. She will spend this summer working in a comparative cognition lab studying behavioral and cognitive science of primates.
McCoy, who is also interested in paleontology, intends to pursue a PhD. She also sings for New Blue, Yale's oldest female a capella group.
McCoy competed in the 60-meter hurdles at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships indoors (9.51). At the outdoor Ivy League Heptagonal Championships she competed in the 400 hurdles (1:06.44) and was on the 4x400-meter relay team (3:56.81). She had a PR of 32.36 meters in the javelin. Indoors, she had PRs in the 200 (27.47), 55 hurdles (9.05) and 60 hurdles (9.30).
A graduate of North Allegheny High, McCoy is in Branford College at Yale.
McCoy was the only sophomore to make the first team in District 1's university division. Voting for the Academic All-District teams was done by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Nominees for the award must be key contributors to their varsity team while also maintaining a grade-point average of at least 3.30. There are eight districts throughout the country, and first team Academic All-District selections are eligible to be selected as Academic All-Americans. That award is announced on June 23.
