Yale to Host Season Opener Meet on Saturday
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The members of the Yale women's track and field team will lace up their spikes for the first time this season when the Bulldogs host the annual Yale Season Opener on Saturday at Coxe Cage. Saturday marks the end of a long off-season for all but the cross country runners, who will take the rest of the year off before diving into indoor competition in the New Year. This year's squad boasts a deep roster with a talented complement of freshmen.
Yale's sprinters are raring to get back into the racing mindset. They are lead by senior captain Allison Rue, who competes mostly in the longer sprints: 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash. Other upperclassmen sprinters include sophomore Elle Brunsdale, sophomore Emily Cable, junior Jenna Hessert, senior Adele Jackson-Gibson, junior Kelsey Lin and junior Anna McCahon. Freshmen Grace Brittan and Sydney Cureton will get their feet wet in their first collegiate meets.
The Yale freshmen class also includes a large number of field athletes: Taylor Eldridge (throws), Noelte (multi), Megan Toon (high jump), Renee Vogel (pole vault) and Karleh Wilson (throws). They are joined by veterans sophomore Alisha Jordan (jumps), junior Teresa Parent (jumps), junior Kristen Proe (jumps), senior Antonia Renker (throws), sophomore Korbin Richards (throws), sophomore Catherine Shih (pole vault), junior Emily Urciuoli (pole vault) and senior Natalie Wedell (throws).
Distance and middle distance runners make up the largest proportion of the Yale team. They include sophomore Hannah Alpert, freshman Isabel Amend, junior Sarah Barry, junior Millie Chapman, sophomore Anna Demaree, junior Wendy DeWolf, senior Jennifer Donnelly, sophomore Sarah Eckinger, junior Liana Epstein, senior Tori Flannery, sophomore Samantha Fry, senior Annelies Gamble, sophomore Kira Garry, senior Phoebe Gaston, freshman Anna-Sophie Harling, senior Caitlin Hudson, senior Nihal Kayali, sophomore Alyssa Laguardia, senior Elizabeth Marvin, freshman Elizabeth McDonald, freshman Shannon McDonnell, junior Rachel O'Driscoll and freshman Emily Stark.
This year's Bulldog squad will not be impacted too heavily by graduation: only two seniors were on last year's best performance list: sprinter Alexa Monti '12 and distance runner Lindsey Raymond '12.
The Yale Season Opener will kick off at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday with field events, while track events will begin at 11:15 a.m. Meet information is available at http://yalebulldogs.com/information/track_meets/college/index. Results will be available at www.yalebulldogs.com after the meet ends. Spectator buses will run between Payne Whitney Gym and Coxe Cage on Saturday.
