Kayali to Race on Saturday
NEW HAVEN, Conn.-This Friday, one member of Yale track and field competed for a chance to continue on in NCAA Championships at the NCAA East Regional meet. Sophomore Kira Garry was the first of two Bulldogs to compete at the meet, with her teammate and cross country captain, senior Nihal Kayali, set to run in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday. Although Garry put up a fight in her signature event, the 3,000-meter steeplechase, her field of competitors was by far one of the toughest she has seen this year, and she missed qualifying for the semifinal round at the National Championships, to be raced in Eugene, Ore. in June. Her time of 10:38.28 was good for 14th place in her heat.
Garry wraps up her season well—having improved on her best performance in the 1,500-meter run, and competed in everything from the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs, to the 10,000-meter race. She will start her season next year with cross country in the fall. Though her talents are not limited to a single event, she will likely continue to be the Bulldog's ace in the 3,000-meter steeplechase when the outdoor track season rolls around next year.
When Kayali competes in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday, scoring will be similar to Friday's steeplechase, in which the three-fastest performers, as well as the next three best, qualified to advance. As both events are long distance, there are no quarter finals. Instead, Kayali will either have to place in her heat's top five, or have one of two best times after the top 10 finishers in the two heats in order to advance to the semifinal round in June.
