Garry Sets School Record in 3,000-Meter Steeplechase at NCAA Prelims
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—This Friday marked the final day of competition for the Yale Bulldogs at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round. The meet was held in Jacksonville, Florida.
Late Friday night, newly elected captain junior Kira Garry competed in her signature event—the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Her finish of 10:17.52 marks a significant improvement over her previous personal best and as a result, a new school record. This is the third time Garry has set the Yale record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase—the first being in her freshman year and the last, earlier this season. Her new personal best surpasses her previous record by more than three seconds.
To qualify for the meet, Garry ranked as one of the top-48 competitors in her event in the East region. Though she entered the meet ranked No. 29 in the region, Garry's performance on Friday catapulted her to 16th place. Moreover, she came within seconds of qualifying to advance on to the Division I Championships. In her previous two performances at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round, Garry placed 42nd and 40th, demonstrating the growth of her talent this season.
