David Shoehalter

2005-06 is David Shoehalter's 12th year as the mentor of Yale's sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. After beginning his career as a volunteer assistant at his Alma Mater, the University of Pennsylvania in 1989, he moved on to Lafayette College in 1990. In his four years at Lafayette, Coach "Shoe," established a preeminent hurdle and jumps program for the Leopards. He guided numerous athletes to all-Patriot League and all-East status. Including current Yale assistant Marc Davis. In 1994 Shoehalter embarked on his career at Yale and his presence made an immediate impact on the Bulldogs sprints, hurdles and jumps groups. In his first eight years he has coached numerous athletes to all-Ivy and all-East honors including Yale's first IC4A champion in the Hurdles since the early 1970's. Yale's sprints, jumps and hurdles record book has been virtually rewritten under Shoehalter's guidance. Five years ago, Shoehalter took over the horizontal jumps group and his athletes have since earned 20 All-Ivy honors and 14 All-East honors in those events, with Six NCAA provisional qualifiers. As the track and field recruiting coordinator, he brings a tireless enthusiasm and knowledge of the sport to the program. In 2000 Shoehalter was promoted to Associate Head Coach of Men's and Women's Track and Field. His stated goal is to create a program that is competitive in all event areas and on all levels. Shoehalter is USATF level II certified in the Jumps and Sprints/Hurdles. He is the secretary of the Heptagonal Coaches Association and serves on the IC4A jury of appeals. A 1989 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in History, Shoehalter captained the Quakers as a senior and was a scorer in the hurdles and the pentathlon at the Heptagonal Championships. He earned medals in the hurdles and as a member of the 4X400 relay team, for the USA in the 1989 World Maccabiah Games. He resides in Stamford, Connecticut with his wife Gina.
