Former Yale track star Kate O'Neill '03 is one of 11 Bulldogs in Athens for the 2004 Olympics. O'Neill will compete in the 10K on August 27, and is keeping an on-line journal for yalebulldogs.com to document her experience. August 15th Last night, I left Athens for Crete. USATF has a training site for the Olympic team here. I was a little disappointed to leave the Olympic Village, but Crete is absolutely beautiful. We are all staying in a resort right on the water. Team coaches drive us to trails and a nearby track for practices. This morning I ran with my sister (Laura '03) and the other distance runners on the Olympic team. We ran on a path that followed the coastline. We had to run through two herds of sheep--definitely not something I encounter when running in New Haven! I feel very lucky that the US team brought us here to train. Without the distractions and activities of the Olympic Village, we will be able to concentrate and focus on our races. August 16th I had an interval workout at the track today. The temperature was a bit cooler today. I think everyone on the team was happy to have better conditions for their workouts. At dinner tonight, the resort had Greek dancing and music! It was a nice treat! August 17th Some members of the track team started leaving Crete today. We will all leave on different days depending on our race schedule. My race (the 10K) is not until August 27th so I will be here longer than most of the other athletes.
