Clavadetscher Claims Second Ivy League Rookie of the Week Honor
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — After playing an
integral part in the Yale volleyball team’s 2-0 road weekend
at Cornell and Columbia, Kerry Clavadetscher has been recognized by
the Ivy League as its Rookie of the Week. The freshman setter, who
averaged 12.86 assists per set in seven frames of action, has now
earned the distinction in two of the past three weeks.
At Cornell on Friday night, Clavadetscher racked up a match-best 34
assists as the Bulldogs swept Big Red. She added six digs, two
kills and a career-best three blocks in the contest. She followed
that performance with a career-high 56 assists in Saturday’s
four-set victory at Columbia. She once again complimented her
assist total with six digs and two kills against the Lions,
rounding out her statline with an ace and a block.
For the season, Clavadetscher has been the second-most prolific
setter in the Ivy League with an average of 10.50 assists per
frame. The Seattle, Wash. native has also contributed 2.12 digs per
set, 19 blocks in 42 sets of action for the 14-2 Bulldogs.
Clavadetscher has also landed six service aces and dropped in 17
kills from the setter position.
Seven weeks into the 2009 campaign, Yale players have earned
Ancient Eight honors on five occasions. In addition to
Clavadetscher’s pair of Rookie of the Week nods, Seniors Cat
Dailey, Alexis Crusey and Laurel Johnson were each tabbed as Ivy
League Player of the Week during the non-conference schedule.
Sophomore Bridget Hearst was also honored this week as a member of
the Ivy League Weekly Honor Roll. Hearst turned in a remarkable
performance in the Bulldogs' win at Columbia, as she tallied a
match-best 27 kills on 35 swings with just four errors for a
stellar .657 hitting percentage. Hearst, whose 27 kills marked the
most by a Yale player since Shannon Farrell ’07 totaled 31
kills in five sets against Cornell in 2004, had nine kills in the
third frame alone against the Lions. She lands of the Weekly Honor
Roll for the second week in 2009.
Clavadetscher, Hearst and the Bulldogs continue their run through
the Ivy League this weekend at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
Dartmouth (7-9, 3-3 Ivy) visits the Elm City on Friday night for a
7 p.m. tilt, and Harvard (7-10, 3-3 Ivy) makes the trek to New
Haven on Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. contest.
