Cat Dailey Named Ivy League Player of the Week

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Senior outside hitter Cat Dailey, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, has been named Ivy League Player of the Week after earning Most Valuable Player honors at the 2009 Yale Invitational this past weekend. Dailey picked up where she left off in 2008 by scorching Georgetown, Fairfield and Colorado as Yale swept through the competition to win the preseason event. Dailey hit at a sizzling .487 clip, notching 39 kills on 78 attempts with just one attack error.

Dailey, who averaged 4.88 kills per set for the tournament, rounded out her weekend with a 3.38 digs per set average, four service aces, three blocks and three assists. In the opener against Georgetown on Friday, Dailey had 14 kills without an error for a .424 hitting percentage. She added 13 digs to notch a double-double and also tacked on two assists and a block in a Yale sweep. The Bulldogs would also sweep Fairfield the following afternoon, with Dailey notching eight kills, five digs, two blocks and an assist in just two sets of action. Her final contest of the weekend was her best as Dailey hit a remarkable .607, piling up a match-high 17 kills on 28 errorless swings in a convincing Yale sweep of Colorado. She also picked up four service aces and nine digs to fall just shy of her second double-double of the weekend.

Freshman middle blocker Haley Wessels, who joined Dailey on the All-Tournament Team at the Yale Invitational, landed a slot on the Ivy League Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 1.44 kills (13 total kills) and amassing eight blocks, including five solo stuffs. She notched four kills, three assists, two service aces and four blocks (three solo) in her first career match on Friday night, a sweep of Georgetown. She matched that kill total the following afternoon with four more finishers, an assist and two blocks in a three-set win over Fairfield. To close out the weekend, Wessels tallied five kills and two blocks (both solo) in the Bulldogs’ dominant sweep of Colorado.

Dailey, Wessels and the Bulldogs are back in action this weekend at the American Volleyball Classic. First serve from Washington, D.C. is slated for 7 p.m. as Yale challenges the host Eagles from American University. The Bulldogs will wrap-up the weekend against 6-0 Virginia Tech on Saturday at 11 a.m.
