Bulldogs Cruise to Three-Set Win
The Yale volleyball team cruised to its second win of the season in its first of two games Saturday, sweeping the Quinnipiac Bobcats in three sets, 25-17, 25-7, 25-22. The Bulldogs were sparked by a 12-kill performance from junior Bridget Hearst and a strong defensive showing from captain Kelly Ozurovich (16 digs) en route to the victory.
Sophomore Haley Wessels led the way for Yale in the first set, contributing five of her eight kills in the first frame. Hearst and classmate Katie Cordell added three kills each, and freshman Kendall Polan followed up Friday night's 41-assist performance with ten assists against the Bobcats, all of which came in the first set.
Sophomore Anya Cekauskas and junior Taylor Cramm controlled the net for the Bulldogs in the second set with two kills each. Cekauskas stayed hot in the third, finishing with seven kills in the match, and Cordell also continued her strong play in the third, finishing with six kills overall. Cramm (four kills) and freshman McHaney Carter (three kills) rounded out what proved to be a well-balanced scoring attack for the Bulldogs.
Yale showed strength across the board on the defensive side, as well, as Cordell backed Ozurovich's 16-dig performance with eight digs of her own. Freshman Erica Reetz added six digs and Hearst five as the Bulldogs stymied the Bobcats' attack.
Yale will be back in action tonight at 7 p.m. when the Bulldogs take on the Rhode Island Rams in the final game of the 2010 Yale Invitational at John J. Lee Amphitheater.
