SAN DIEGO -- Six Bulldogs return home to California this weekend as Yale continues its challenging non-conference schedule at the University of San Diego Tournament.
This weekend, California natives Mollie Rogers (San Diego), Kendall Polan (Cardiff), Maddie Rudnick (Encinitas) and Karlee Fuller (Olivenhain), Kelly Johnson (Palos Verdes) and Jesse Ebner (Portola Valley) and the rest of the Bulldogs will face UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State and host 17th-ranked University of San Diego.
After going 3-2 in New Haven during the first two weekends of the season, the Bulldogs traveled to California on Thursday and will begin play in San Diego on Friday evening against UC Santa Barbara at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs play USD at 3 p.m. Eastern Time and finish up the tournament later in the day against Fresno State (8 p.m. ET).
This weekend culminates the final pre-conference tournament of the season. Last weekend, the Bulldogs split matches with a win over Villanova and a loss to Northwestern.
Team captain Haley Wessels earned became the second straight Bulldog to earn Ivy League Player of the Week honors. Following Polan's week one performance, Wessels hit .558, averaged 3.25 kills per set and earned Yale Invitational All-Tournament honors.
In addition, Wessels had four solo blocks and four block assists last weekend. Another middle, Jesse Ebner excelled last weekend. A freshman, Ebner hit .423, averaged 3.5 kills per set and added one solo block and six block assists.
This weekend's opponents:
- University of San Diego (5-2) plays its first home matches of the season. The Toreros went 2-1 at the USC tournament last weekend, including a 5-set loss to No. 5 USC. Alaysia Brown (2.80 kills/set) and Katie Hoekman (2.60 kills/set) are the top hitters for USD.
- UC Santa Barbara (6-5) went 1-2 last weekend the New Mexico Tournament. Leah Scully entered the week leading the Big West with 180 kills.
- Fresno State (5-4) lost two of three matches last weekend and is led by Marissa Brand, who averages 3.65 kills per set.
