Helped Bulldogs To Sweep Of Princeton & Penn

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman setter Kelly Johnson played like a veteran in helping the Yale volleyball team to a big weekend sweep of Princeton and Penn. On Tuesday, she was rewarded by being named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.

Johnson, a Palos Verdes, Calif., native, led the Bulldogs with 28 kills and seven total blocks as Yale moved into sole possession of first place.

In the 3-1 victory over Princeton, Johnson produced a triple-double that included a season-high 19 kills. She hit .421 and added 18 assists and 11 digs. With the fourth set tied at 18, Johnson had a block assist and then on the next point slammed a diagonal kill to give Yale a two-point edge.

The next night, she just missed a triple-double in a 3-0 win over Penn. She had 13 assists, nine kills and eight digs.

"Kelly had a great weekend at an important time," said Yale head coach Erin Appleman. "She had a lot of confidence on offense."

In addition, sophomore Maddie Rudnick was named to the Honor Roll. Rudnick, a libero, averaged 5.29 digs per set and added a service ace in the two matches.

Yale (11-5, 7-0 Ivy) has won eight straight matches and hosts Brown on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
