Yale Holds 40-15 Edge in Kills, Serves Up Eight Aces
The scores of the match were 25-17, 25-15 and 25-18. The Bulldogs improved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while Harvard fell to 6-5 and 1-1 in Ivy play.
Yale dominated the first set and never looked back.
Shepherd served off seven straight points, which included two aces, to increase Yale's lead to 17-5. Yale had eight aces in the match and held a 40-15 edge in kills.
The Bulldogs scored 11 of the first 14 points and hit .355 as a team in the second set. Harvard responded with five of the next six points to cut its deficit to 12-8 until Kendall Polan shifted the momentum.
Polan's kill started an 8-2 run that included three kills from Ebner and two from Rogers to push Yale's lead to 20-10. Polan finished with 27 assists, 12 digs and four kills.
After a Harvard service error opened the third set, Ebner served five straight points and the Bulldogs opened up another quick lead at 6-1 -- a lead they never gave up. Later in the set, Rogers smashed a kill and then served up an ace to increase the lead to 18-10.
Kelly Johnson set up a Polan kill, then Polan set up another Rogers kill to increase Yale's lead to 20-10. Johnson finished with nine assists, eight kills and seven digs.
The Bulldogs host Dartmouth tomorrow at 5 p.m.
