Yale Improves to 5-1, Takes Over Second Place in Ivy League

PHILADELPHIA -- The Bulldogs extended their win steak to four with a sweep at Penn on Friday night.

Four different Bulldogs had at least 12 digs and Yale hit double-digits in blocks for the second straight match.  The Bulldogs had 74 digs in three sets with Brittani Steinberg leading the way with 16 digs, while Kate Swanson (15), Tori Shepherd (14) and Franny Arnautou (12) all reached double figures. 

The scores of the match were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-16.

With the win, Yale improved to 5-1 in the conference and moved into sole possession of second place in the Ivy League and set up a showdown with first-place Princeton on Saturday evening.  

Brittani Steinberg led the Bulldogs with nine kills and 16 digs.  Steinberg also had four block assists, including one with Kate Aitkenhead to tie the first set at 18. On the next point, Steinberg gave Yale the lead with a kill forced a Penn timeout. 

Steinberg started the second set with another kill, and then served up four straight points as the Bulldogs surged to a quick 5-0 lead.  

Shreya Dixit (eight kills) extended Yale's lead to six before Megan Rasmussen followed with one of the Bulldogs' eight service aces to make it 22-15.  A Penn error on the next point gave Yale its largest lead of the set.

In the third set, Kelley Wirth broke a 10-all tie, had four kills in the set including match point. 

The Bulldogs face Princeton at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
