Defense Lifts Yale Over Brown

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Bulldogs did it with defense and timely hitting to win their Ivy League opener over Brown on Friday night.

Yale (7-3) held a 47-31 advantage in digs -- led by Kate Swanson's 15 -- Kelley Wirth paced the Bulldogs with 13 kills in a 3-0 victory.  The scores of the match were 25-22, 25-16 and 25-23.

Shreya Dixit provided a lift off the bench with six kills on seven swings with two solo blocks and two block assists, while Tristin Kott added six kills on seven swings without an error.

It was Kott who started a 12-3 run to close out the first set for the Bulldogs.   In the midst of the spurt, Gray Malias, Kaitlyn Gibbons and Izzy Simqu struck for consecutive kills to give the Bulldogs a 23-22 lead.  Wirth and Gibbons closed out the set with back to back kills. 

In the second set, Yale hit .370 and went on a 14-3 run during one stretch.  

In the deciding third set, Wirth broke a 21-21 tie with a kill. Dixit put the Bulldogs at match point before Kott closed out the match.

On defense, Kathryn Attar, Franny Arnautou and Gibbons each had eight digs for the Bulldogs.  Gibbons added five kills, while Arnautou dished out a team-best 18 assists. 

The Bulldogs host Penn on Friday at 7 p.m., and Princeton at 5 p.m. next Saturday.
