ORLANDO, FLA. -- Yale snapped UCF's streak of 13 straight set victories and went point for point in a five set Knights in an intense 3-2 loss to the Knights on Saturday afternoon.
UCF, which already defeated No. 7 USC and took a set from No. 4 Florida, took all it could handle against the visiting Bulldogs. The scores of the match were 25-22, 25-23, 16-25, 24-26 and 15-13.
"I thought with fought really hard and played great team volleyball," Yale head coach Erin Appleman said.
Kelley Wirth and Kate Swanson were named to the all-tournament team. Wirth topped her career-high through four sets with 20 kills and finished with 23 -- one short of a career-best -- while hitting a blistering .383 for the match, while Swanson finished with 26 digs and averaged 5.33 over the three matches in the tournament.
After dropping the first two sets in close fashion, Yale stormed back, took the next two and kept it going in the fifth. The Bulldogs (6-3) never quit, and came back from a 9-7 deficit in the fifth to take a 13-10 lead. Frances Arnautou (59 assists and nine digs) used a nifty attack to begin the rally. Samantha Bray (15 kills) followed with a point before Ellis DeJardin tied it with her first of two aces in the set.
Bray and Arnautou combined on a block to give Yale an 11-10 lead. Kathryn Attar finished off a free ball for a point and DeJardin served up another ace to give Yale a 13-10 lead before the Knights put together one last rally.
The Bulldogs return to action next Saturday at Brown to begin the Ivy League portion of the schedule.
