Bulldogs Sweep Long Island at UAlbany Invitational
Sept. 27, 2008
ALBANY, N.Y. - Freshman Bridget Hearst tallied a career-high 10 kills, and junior Alexis Crusey notched a double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs to lead the Yale volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over the Long Island Blackbirds to wrap up action at the UAlbany Invitational on Saturday evening. Senior Ally Mendenhall distributed a match-high 37 assists for the Bulldogs.
With the victory, Yale improved to 6-3, while Long Island dropped to 6-8.
"This was a very solid team effort," said Yale Head Coach Erin Appleman. "Long Island is a very offensive team, and we really held our own on defense."
The Bulldogs came out running on all cylinders in the first set as they jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead. After the Blackbirds reeled off successive points to cut the lead of four, a kill by Mendenhall and a pair of services aces by Dailey ran the score to 10-3 and prompted Long Island to call a timeout. The stoppage in play did little the Bulldogs' momentum, as Yale's lead grew as high as 11, while never dropping below 5, en route to a convincing first set victory, 25-14.
The second stanza brought about more of the same for Yale. The Bulldogs notched the first point of the match on a kill by Hearst and never relinquished the lead. A kill from junior Cat Dailey ended the set with Bulldogs getting the nod by a score of 25-16. Crusey had nine kills on 14 swings without an error for a hitting percentage of .643 in the set.
Trailing 2-0, the Blackbirds started to put the pressure on Yale in third set, as they hung tough with the Bulldogs and eventually claimed an 18-17 advantage. After a Yale timeout, the squad rallied with an 8-2 run to claim the lead and, eventually the match with a 25-20 third set win.
Martina Racic had a match-high 15 kills to lead the Long Island offense. Chelsey Stanton posted 27 assists, and Svetlana Simic totaled 17 digs for the Blackbirds.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Friday, Oct. 3, as they kick off their Ivy League schedule in Providence, R.I. at Brown. The teams will wrap-up a home-and-home weekend series at the John J. Lee Amphitheater in New Haven on Saturday. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 7 p.m.
