Liya Assefa Elected Captain for 2010
Alexandra Cadicamo Wins Women’s Cross Country Award
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - At the annual cross country banquet on Monday night, coaches and runners looked back on the season, even as track competition has already begun. The Bulldogs elected junior Liya Assefa as their captain for next year, and senior Alexandra Cadicamo won the women’s cross country award.
Assefa has been a consistent contributor on the team since she joined. She took freshman year off from competitive running and walked on as a sophomore. She proceeded to compete as one of the Bulldogs’ top seven at the Heptagonals Championship that year – the fall of 2008 – and competed outdoors in the spring of 2009 in the 1500-meter run. This past fall she was the sixth Bulldog to cross the finish line at Heps and the second Yale runner at NCAA Regionals. Assefa is a biology major in Davenport College.
The John Clearly Michael Stanley Class of ’54 women’s cross country award is given to a competitor who has shown good performance, commitment and dedication to the team. Cadicamo has been a part of the Bulldogs’ top ten cross country runners since she was a freshman, competing at Heps every year. This year Cadicamo was Yale’s second runner at Heps and the fourth Yale finisher at NCAA Regionals. Cadicamo is double-majoring in Economics and Political Science, and is a member of Timothy Dwight College.
Assefa, Cadicamo and the rest of Yale’s distance team will compete again on Jan. 9 at Coxe Cage at the College Invitational.
