Younger Racers Look to Gain Experience in Boston

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - This weekend, the Yale women's cross country team will travel to Boston to race in the New England Championships at Franklin Park. While the team's frontrunners will rest up for the Penn State National meet next weekend, this week's races will give more members a chance to compete. Junior Madeline Adams, senior Liya Assefa, freshman Melissa Chapman, freshman Wendy DeWolfe, sophomore Jennifer Donnelly, junior Jennifer Downing, sophomore Phoebe Gaston, sophomore Caitlin Hudson, junior Kristin Johnson, freshman Clare Kane, sophomore Jacque Sahlberg, and senior Celia Stockwell will all suit up for the Bulldogs.

"As it's the week before the NCAA Pre-National meet and a couple of other big invitationals (like Penn State), most of the good schools will rest their racers," said head coach Mark Young '68, the Mark T. Young '68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field.

Chapman and Downing both finished in the top three for Yale against Harvard and Princeton on Sept. 24, with Hudson and Sahlberg in the top seven. Chapman and fellow freshmen DeWolfe and Kane will especially look to gain more collegiate racing experience this weekend.

The New England Championships will include Division I and III teams from all over the region. Brown was last year's champion; Yale did not compete. The Bulldogs took home first place in 2000. Yale's top seven for the day will race at 12:45 p.m., with the rest of the team racing at noon. Results will be available on and after the race.
