NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Nolan Grooms, who threw for a career-high 363 yards and four touchdowns in Yale's 45-3 victory over Morgan State, has been selected as this week's New England Football Writers Association Gold Helmet Award winner presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
In addition to his arm, Grooms also made an impact with his feet, rushing for a team-high 87 yards on just nine carries. His 450 yards of total offense tied for the fifth most in a single game in school history.
Grooms, of Lake Wylie, S.C., connected on touchdown tosses of 31, 3, 33 and 25 yards as the Bulldogs cruised to a victory in the 2023 NAACP Harmony Classic at Yale Bowl, Class of 1954 Field.
The last Bulldog to win the Gold Helmet was
Tre Peterson after he rushed for 173 yards in Yale's 24-21 victory over Dartmouth last fall.
For the ninth straight year, the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation is the presenting sponsor for both the weekly and end-of-year Gold Helmet Awards presented to student-athletes from FBS, FCS, Division II and Division III institutions throughout New England.
