Bulldogs Close Out Field Before Completing Competition

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Yale sailing team has clinched the Laserperformance Team Race National Championship Title with a 20-2 record.

Yale is guaranteed a victory after an outstanding Day 2. The sailors completed the rest of round 1 on the second day of racing. The top eight teams moved into a silver round robin, where Yale won six of its seven races, losing only once to the U.S. Naval Academy. The Bulldogs advance to the top four with Georgetown, Stanford and Dartmouth. Any losses in that round would be overridden by the fact that Yale has previously won twice against each of these schools, thus securing Yale the title.

The four rotating skippers for the Bulldogs in this competition are senior Nic Baird, senior Nick Hernandez, junior Chrissie Klingler and sophomore Shawn Harvey. The crews for the Bulldogs are senior Kira Woods, junior Graceann Nicolosi, sophomore Claudia Loiacono, sophomore Sonia Lingos-Utley, and first year Sam Tobin.

This win is evidence of the incredible work the Bulldogs have put into team racing all year, and a true testament to the skills and knowledge of seniors Baird, Hernandez and Woods; as well as to the incredible strength of the Yale coaching staff: McNay Family Head Coach Zack Leonard '89, associate coach Bill Healy, and assistant coach Martim Anderson. Anderson, a new addition to the Yale coaching staff this year, proved his team racing prowess just a few weeks ago by winning the esteemed Wilson Trophy, and has been an invaluable asset to the Bulldogs as they prepared for this championship.
