Yale Sweeps Dartmouth in Home Opener

Yale Sweeps Dartmouth in Home Opener

Yale Takes Olympic Axe

DERBY, Conn. – The Yale Bulldogs had a great morning of racing with all boats finishing ahead of Dartmouth. The Elis retain the Olympic Axe, which has never left the Gilder Boathouse since its dedication in 2004.

Today's results mark Yale's fourth consecutive sweep against Dartmouth. All of Yale's boats remain undefeated this spring.

The Yale 1V lurched off the line at 41 strokes per minute and walked half a boat length on Dartmouth by the 500. By the 1000, Yale had opened up a length of open water and continued to walk away. Ultimately, the Varsity beat out the Big Green by more than 12 seconds.

Yale's 2V saw the closest race of the morning. Although Dartmouth maintained connection with Yale for the first 1000, Yale pushed during the latter half finishing 5.6 seconds ahead.

Captain Angus Morrison '19, who rowed seven seat in the 2V, said of today's racing, "I'm proud of our results. The whole Yale team really respects Dartmouth and we appreciate them coming down to Derby every year to race us early in the season. We look forward to lining up again later this spring."

Yale's 3V came off the line level with Dartmouth before opening up some distance in the second 500. The burners kicked in during the second 1000 when Yale opened up a four boat length margin. The Elis finished 11 seconds ahead of Dartmouth.

Yale's lower boats demonstrated impressive speed as well. Yale's 4V, racing in the first event of the morning, beat Dartmouth by more than 2 boat lengths.

Yale's 5V and 6V, racing against Dartmouth's 5V, both triumphed over the Big Green by a significant margin.

Despite some early showers, the rowing conditions were great with flat water and temperatures in the mid 60s. A light headwind was counteracted by strong flow which made for fast rowing conditions.

Yale is back on the race course next Saturday in Philadelphia. The Bulldogs look to take down Penn and Columbia to recapture the Blackwell Cup.
