Gill extends win streak

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Bulldogs defeated No. 11 St. Lawrence 7-2 at the Brady Center in their first match of the weekend.

The Elis recorded six sweeps, two of which were against St. Lawrence's No. 1 and No. 3 seeds, both of whom are ranked top-15 nationally.

Yale's No. 1 seed, Spencer Lovejoy, beat Mohamed El Gawarhy, who is No. 12 in the nation. It was Lovejoy's fourth win of the season. No. 3 Harrison Gill blanked Belal Naware, who is No. 15 in the country and now has just one loss on the season.

"Belal is an extremely strong player and has had very good results so far this season, so I knew beforehand it would be a tough match." said Gill. "Last year both the team and I, personally, lost to St. Lawrence, so coming out with wins on both of those fronts was a testament to the work we've put in in the off-season."

Gill's victory on Saturday makes him 6-0 on the season. He is the only undefeated athlete on the team.

"It is always a good feeling to have not lost a match for the team," said Gill. "[Former Men's captain Cyrus Mehta]'s coined phrase 'Champions Push On' runs through my head a lot in these matches.

Last season I had a good amount of strong individual results, but it is much more gratifying this year as these individual wins are part of overall team wins. We're reaping the benefits of the training from this fall, summer, and even last spring."

Gill added that he hopes to keep the strong energy going against a tough Rochester team on Sunday. "We know Rochester will be tough, and every matchup will be close from 1 to 9. Personally, I am hoping to continue playing composed, concentrated, and determined squash."

The Rochester match, which is a noon start at the Brady center, will be streamed live on ESPN+.
