Shaffer Finishes 16th in Epee at Garret Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Captain Robyn Shaffer provided the highlight for Yale's first weekend of fencing in 2011-12, placing 16th in the epee competition this weekend at Penn State's Garret Open. This was the Bulldogs' first action since their 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championship last spring.

Shaffer, a junior, advanced through three rounds of pools (round robin format) to the first direct-elimination, 15-touch bout, where she lost.

"Robyn had great results against tough opponents during this match, and her composure and fight throughout the day was a great influence and inspiration for the rest of our team," said senior Jillian Liu.

Yale's other epee competitors in the field of 46 included freshman Maryne Dijkstra (38th), sophomore Alison Barton (42nd) and freshman Margaret Kandel (44th).

In foil, none of Yale's fencers made it out of the first round of pools, though Liu came close. She finished 38th out of 50, winning the consolation bracket.

"As our first tournament, it was great to scope out the landscape to see what we will be up against for the rest of the year, and we will surely be working to prepare for the rest of the season," said Liu.

In sabre, sophomore Lucy Partman was the only Bulldog to make it out of the first round of pools, placing 36th out of 42 competitors.

"Lucy did a wonderful job staying calm and focused, fighting her way into the second round," said Shaffer.

The Bulldogs were without sophomore Laura Benoit (saber), senior Alexia Cesar (epee) and freshman Lauren Miller (foil).

Yale is now off until the Dec. 4 Brandeis Invitational.

"I'm really proud of the women's team—our freshmen were able to gain valuable experience against strong fencers, and we're ready to look forward to the rest of the season," said Shaffer.
