Stellar Performance in Foil Competition

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Competing in her first NCAA National Championship, freshman Lauren Miller claimed seventh place in a powerful foil field during Mar. 22-23 in Columbus, Ohio.

The result is a strong finish for Miller's season, placing her amongst the very best of women's foil fencers in the nation. In the competition, Miller notched up 15 victories with a percentage of 0.652.

"It was an amazing tournament with really strong competition," Miller said. "Coach was extremely helpful — he pushed me to fence at my highest level and to maintain my sharpest focus throughout the two days."

The winner of the foil competition, St. John's fencer Evgeniya Kirpicheva, scored 17 victories with a percentage of 0.739.

Miller gained her berth at the National Championship after placing ninth place in foil at the Mar. 11 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. That result came despite the fact she only returned to competition from injury around two weeks before the competition, according to junior captain Robyn Shaffer.

"Although I recently came back from a leg injury, I felt like this was the best fencing of my season," Miller said. "NCAAs was a great finish to my freshman season and I feel fortunate that I was able to attend. I'm looking forward to a strong start next season."

At the Regional Championship, Miller's record, combined with her overall performance through the dual-meet regular season, qualified her for the National Championship in eighth place among Northeast Region fencers.

Miller is one of four Yalies in Columbus for the weekend's NCAA National Championship — three members of the Yale men's fencing team round out the contingent of Bulldogs, and will begin their competition Saturday.
