Lew Finishes 12th in Saber

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Up against some of the strongest fencers in the nation, a trio from the Yale women's fencing team—freshman Joanna Lew, sophomore Katherine Miller and junior captain Lauren Miller—have wrapped up competition at the Mar. 20-23 NCAA National Championship.

Lew posted the best result of the three Bulldogs, finishing in 12th place in saber competition at this year's national contest, hosted by Ohio State at the French Field House in Columbus, Ohio. Lew finished with 11 victories out of 23 total bouts.

Meanwhile, Lauren Miller and Katherine Miller finished in 17th place in foil and epee, respectively. Lauren Miller recorded eight victories in 23 bouts, while Katherine miller posted 10 wins in her 23 bouts.

The three fencers advanced to the NCAA National Championship as part of a field of 144 fencers across all weapons, after their performances during the regular season and at the Mar. 9 NCAA Northeast Regional in Wellesley, Mass.

Lew had advanced to the NCAA National Championship in ninth place for the northeast after finishing ninth in saber at the NCAA Northeast Regional, while Katherine Miller had qualified in seventh place from the northeast after an 11th-place finish in epee at the regional contest.

Lauren Miller, meanwhile, had advanced in fourth place amongst northeast fencers for the national competition after capturing sixth place in foil at this year's regional contest. At last year's NCAA National Championship, she finished in 13th place, while the year before she captured seventh place.

The close of the NCAA National Championship wraps up the Bulldogs' 2013-14 fencing season, one in which the team qualified its most fencers to the NCAAs in recent years. In addition, Yale claimed victories in matches against Drew, Sacred Heart and Vassar.
