NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Yale women's fencing team has elected rising junior Joanna Lew as captain for the 2015-2016 season.
"I am very excited to be the Women's Fencing captain this coming year," Lew said. "I feel there is a lot we can work on in terms of fitness and in the way that we ready ourselves for competition."
In the 2014-2015 season, Lew served as the saber squad captain. This role, along with her extensive competitive experience, positions her to be a strong team captain.
In 2014, Lew placed 12th at the NCAA Championships in women's saber as a freshman, which earned her All-American honors. Before coming to Yale, she represented the United States at the Cadet World Cup in 2011 and 2012.
"We have a highly intelligent, well-bonded, wonderful group of people," she said. "Given this amazing group of people I can't help but feel extremely grateful for the opportunity to lead."
Outside of the fencing salon, Lew is also a poet in WORD: Performance Poetry and works on chemical research in the Newhouse Lab at Yale.
