Lew won 9 of 23 total bouts to ultimately finish in 20th place in saber. She was one of 24 competitors in her event. 17th and 18th place also claimed 9 victories of 23 bouts.
She finished ahead of top fencers from Cornell, Northwestern, Sacred Heart and Stanford.
Lew is coming off an ninth-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional, held earlier this month at Poughkeepsie, N.Y. This was her second appearance at the NCAA Championships, after she finished 12th her freshman year.
Lew is a chemistry major in Berkeley College at Yale. She is a graduate of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.
Both Lew and Zhao competed in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top four finishers in each weapon fenced in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, while the non-advancing fencers were awarded a tie for third place.
Zhao finished the foil competition in 21st place, ahead of athletes from Harvard, Temple and the University of California San Diego. She claimed five victories in 23 bouts.
After finishing in 11th place at the Northeast Regional Championships, Zhao earned a place in national tournament. As a freshman, she was competing for her first time at the Championship in the foil event.
A graduate of Earl of March Secondary School, she is a member of Silliman College.
The NCAA Championships marks the end of the a strong season for the Bulldogs. Throughout the season, the team saw wins against Brown, Columbia, Duke, Johns Hopkins and Penn State.
