Yale Too Much for Sacred Heart

Yale Too Much for Sacred Heart

Dec. 8, 2007

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bulldogs topped Sacred Heart to win their home opener Saturday at the Fencing Gallery in Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The 16-11 win evens the team's 2007-2008 dual meet record at 3-3. While each squad continues to look for its rhythm, it was the foil squad, led by sophomore standout Lidia Gocheva, that picked up seven victories to pace the Bulldogs.

In the squad's 7-2 win, Gocheva took all three of her bouts in dominating fashion: she did not allow a single touch. Fellow sophomore Jennifer Ivers posted a 2-1 record, while senior Umi-shakti Ausar-Sahu nailed down two victories of her own.

The epee squad claimed a 5-4 victory. Sophomore Rebecca Moss tallied three wins. Junior Abigail Fraeman and freshman Pruittiporn Kerdchoochuen both added victories to give Yale the weapon.

Another sophomore, saberist Farrah Kimovec, snagged two of Yale's four victories with the sabre in a tough-fought 5-4 loss to the Pioneers' sabre squad. Sophomore Katherine Arden and freshman Chloe Rossetti contributed the Bulldogs' other victories.

Yale will return to action on Jan. 23 when it hosts Vassar for a dual meet at Payne Whitney Gymnasium in New Haven, Conn.
