BERKELEY, Calif. – The Yale field hockey team's West Coast trip ended with a loss at Cal on Sunday, as the Bears scored two goals in a span of 2:25 late in the first half to take control. Sophomore forward Olivia Levieux scored the Bulldogs' lone goal.
Four saves in the first half by sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Terroso helped Yale (3-2, 0-0 Ivy League) stay close despite an 11-2 Cal shot advantage, but the Bears got goals from forward/midfielder Megan Rodgers at 26:10 and midfielder/forward Fionna Jensen at 28:35 to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Cal (3-3, 0-0 America East) got another goal from Rodgers eight minutes into the second half to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Levieux scored on a straight shot off a corner at 50:50, assisted by first year midfielder Théodora Dillman and junior back Holly Jackson, but the Bulldogs could not mount a further comeback.
Cal is now 3-0 vs. unranked teams and 0-3 vs. ranked teams this season.
The trip to California, which included a game at No. 23 Stanford Friday, gave the Bulldogs a rare chance to play on the West Coast. Yale's last trip to the Golden State came in 2013, when the Bulldogs beat the Bears 3-2 but then fell at Stanford. Yale's roster includes three California natives: sophomore midfielder Iliana Cabral of Camarillo, senior midfielder Marissa Medici of Oceanside and senior forward Brooke Reese of Pacific Palisades.
Yale heads back to the East Coast to start Ivy League play this Friday at No. 18 Harvard.
