Bulldogs Blank Bears for Weekend Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After a close victory for the Yale Bulldogs Thursday night over the Brown Bears, Yale knew it needed to play even better Saturday afternoon. With Greta Skarzynski, Mallory Souliotis and Gianna Meloni leading the charge Thursday night, it only made sense for them to run the game again for the Bulldogs.

Skarzynski had two goals and an assist, Souliotis scored once while adding a helper, and Meloni pitched a 30 save shutout as Yale beat Brown 3-0 in Providence.

Yale (7-10-4, 5-7-2 ECAC) got timely saves from Meloni all game long, but especially in a close first period that ended scoreless. Meloni's second shutout in her past three starts gives her two in her first year with the Bulldogs. She made 21 saves in Thursday's 4-2 win over Brown (2-19-0, 1-13-0) for the win, her first career weekend sweep.

Skarzynski broke the tie in the second period with a power play rocket to give Yale the 1-0 lead. Souliotis and Emma Vlasic each picked up an assist on the play.

The three would combine for another power play goal just 3:36 later, with Souliotis blasting a shot past the Brown goaltender. Vlasic set up the shot after receiving a pass from Skarzynski.

Skarzynski closed out the Bears with an empty net goal with 46 seconds left, weaving through multiple defenders before tucking home a shot from a bad angle.

Yale special teams dominated the game, with the Bulldogs scoring twice on four power plays, including their first two. Yale was a stellar four for four as well on the penalty kill.

With the win, the Bulldogs claim sole possession of the eighth and final playoff spot in the ECAC with just over a month to go.
