New Team Leader Coming Off Best Campaign

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Emma Vlasic, a second-generation Yalie from Wilmette, Ill., has been named captain of the 2018-19 Yale Women's Hockey Team.

The junior forward is coming off her best season as a Bulldog with 18 points, including a dozen goals, the second most on the squad. Vlasic, nicknamed "Pickles" by her teammates, notched two game-winning goals and one shorthanded tally in 2017-18.

"It's a huge honor to be selected by my teammates. Your teammates are the people who make you better and push you to be a better person and a better hockey player," said Vlasic. "The unwavering support and dedication that my teammates have shown the past three years has been incredible and to be selected by such a great group of people that show such passion for the game is a huge honor."

The New Trier Township High School graduate and current Davenport College resident played in all 62 games the last two seasons, and her first career goal came in October of her sophomore year in a win over RIT.

"Emma is the consummate teammate," said Joakim Flygh, Yale's Susan Cavanagh Head Coach of Women's Ice Hockey. "Emma has been fortunate to learn from some great captains at Yale and I have no doubt that she will leave her own mark as captain. We are all excited for Emma and her senior class to lead us into the future."

Vlasic, whose grandfather earned two Yale degrees, is a team captain for the second time in her hockey career. Before coming to New Haven she earned the "C" on her jersey with the Chicago Young Americans, a team she led in scoring multiple times and won two state championships with.

"I try to lead by example on and off the ice. I try to bring a passion for the game to the rink every day that will hopefully rub off on other people. Being positive and working hard in the gym and on the ice is something that other people can feed off," said Vlasic, whose cousin, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, plays for the NHL San Jose Sharks and earned a gold medal in the Sochi Olympics with Team Canada in 2014.

"We expect to be very competitive in our conference. We have what it takes to be a top four team in the ECAC. Our goal at the beginning of every season is to win a National Championship, and that is what we will ultimately be working toward next season."
